Evening Tapestry is Brown Recluse’s first full-length. It conjures to my mind early Elephant6 Collective. They take the pop format and manage to create effective, dark songs which are like sonic candy. All the songs are so sweet and work well with each other.
Taken as a whole, you’re given a quirky take on pop music, never a bad thing. Lately it seems people are mining other decades’ for sonic ideas. Brown Recluse goes further back than the 80s for inspiration, using various hallmarks from the 60s such as that organ.
Some of the vocals remind me strongly of early Belle & Sebastian. “Monday Moon” might as well be a long-lost song of theirs. Other songs give off the impression of older bands, like the Smiths influence on “At Last”. Finally, “March to Your Tomb” has a mellow, laidback atmosphere to lead you out.
Philadelphia seems to be bringing out the psychedelic groups by the handful. First A Sunny Day in Glasgow came along, and now I have this great band. There’s a lot to like in this short album. Also, they’re kind enough to provide you with some songs via their bandcamp from previous outings.
