Nicole Kidman was quoted two months ago as saying she suffered a miscarriage at 23 which led to the couple's decision to adopt a girl, Isabella, and a boy, Connor.
But in a new interview, she says her original remarks were misinterpreted and understated the anguish she suffered during two pregnancies.
Shortly after their wedding at the end of 1990, she says she lost her first child by Cruise because of an ectopic pregnancy - a condition in which an embryo starts to develop in a fallopian tube instead of in the womb.
Speaking in the latest issue of America's Marie Claire magazine, the 40-year-old says she finally managed to become pregnant again. But that pregnancy ended in a miscarriage around the time Cruise filed for divorce from her in 2001.
"It was wrongly reported," she says of the claim that she miscarried her first baby. "It didn't happen. I had a miscarriage at the end of my marriage - but I had an ectopic pregnancy at the beginning of my marriage. It was incredibly traumatic for me."
