Dara Torres broke the U.S. record in the women's 50-meter freestyle by swimming a 23.87 at the short course Arena World Cup in Berlin. The 40-year-old broke the mark of 24.21 Kara Lynn Joyce set on March 18, 2004. One can hardly believe such an "old" athlete can still break the record. Link
Update (July 2008): Dara Torres, with an age of 41, qualified her fifth Olympics for the 100m and 50m freestyle swimming at the US Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, becoming the oldest American swimmer ever to attend an Olympic. Update: Dara Torres qualified for Beijing Olympics's 50-Meter Freestyle final as the fastest qualifier swimmer. Her result was 24.27 second. Update: Dara Torres won a silver medal for the USA team. Her result is 24.07 seconds, 0.01s slower than German gold medalist Britta Steffen's new Olympic record time of 24.06 in the Women's 50m Freestyle final in Beijing.
