Movie Review: The Devil Writes Pitchfork ***Warning: Spoilers***

Pitchfork bashing has taken on a new form: full feature length. From the creators of “Meet the Spartans” and “Vampires Suck” comes an once-in-a-lifetime movie. This movie turns around everything you’ve ever thought you’ve known about the writing duo of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. All those terrible movies they made, gone out the window. Whatever sin they have committed to the screen before has since been forgiven with this ‘tour-de-force’.

“The Devil Writes Pitchfork” received a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival. At the Cannes Film Festival they won the Palme d’Or. When they gave their speech, they explained they did all those previous terrible movies in order to build up to this final statement. Both of them stated they understood what people had thought of them. Crass, crude, dumbing down our culture, a virtual toilet bowl collecting the refuse we strained out of our society’s anus, they heard it all. Jason told the audience it was important to keep this project under wraps. For mocking the Pitchfork subculture takes time and effort, neither thing they’ve employed on any of their other movies. To ensure the movie would not be ruined they filmed in near-secrecy.

We begin the movie in a darkened bar on a ship. A gaunt looking man stares blankly at a tall person identified only as “Ryan”. They exchange a few words as the camera passes over legions of dead twenty-somethings impeccably dressed. Finally he puts on a record of Neutral Milk Hotel’s “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” as the ship goes up in flames.

After that we see the NYPD going over the scene. Policemen gasp at the amount of cool, relevant bros who died. Brooklyn lost a great deal of their tastemakers that night, one particularly hip cop says while scrolling through his IPOD. Only two survived the onslaught: some Russian scenester named Vlad and an entry-level kid who didn’t know much about music blogs called John “Entry-Level” McEntire. Vlad mutters incoherently about a mythical music snob legend known as “Ryan Schreiber”. Bringing in a translator and police sketch artist they set forth to draw a picture of this man.

Despite being a total N00B about music John had been granted near full immunity from mocking by those high up on the music food chain. Brought into the police station on a minor Sonic Youth discography violation, he begins to tell the tale in New York City several weeks ago to Nick Drake, a depressive young detective from upstate New York:

Five music pirates of the highest caliber are brought in on illegal downloading charges by the RIAA. While the five of them sit in the cell, they conduct a scheme to leak a huge deal of MP3s, creating a loss of millions of dollars for the music industry. In that process, they will gain so much street cred they will be virtual gods of the music blog-o-sphere. John, the N00B, is there alongside a techno fan from the UK who speaks in a near-incomprehensible accent called Adam, Rothgar a huge metal fan from Scandinavia, and Will, a man well-versed on obscure, limited edition releases. Next to them is Kevin Shields, a man trying to go clean from stealing music who wants to ‘support the artists’ which is met with harsh criticism. Kevin is trying to clear his name with the help of a local musician who is leading a “Riot Grrrl” revival called Kathleen Hanna.

All of them head out to California to leak music from Best Coast, Wavves, No Age, and countless other similar artists. They blog about those releases extensively. By attracting so much hype and attention, they work with another group of like-minded people to get a rare bootleg from an early Bob Dylan concert. Upon meeting the corporate types in a parking garage, they kill them accidently only to realize the alleged ‘rare bootleg’ is actually a re-issue. Tempted to go back to New York they are approached by a representative of Ryan Schreiber called Mr. Stapler. Offered more un-leaked MP3s and cocaine than they’ll ever know what to do with they are also presented with a huge amount of money and dossiers on everything any one of them had ever downloaded ever. What they need to do is defeat the gang from Russia on a boat to steal the MP3s and cocaine away from them.

Nick asks who Ryan is. John explains Ryan is a near-mythical tastemaker for the review site “Pitchfork.com”. According to John, Ryan works through so many different groups of people and bloggers that no one even knows if they are working for him. A story is told, which John believes to be true, about the kind of person Ryan Schreiber is:

“Once, when Ryan was a small-time blogger at Pitchfork, his house was invaded by other Russian bloggers trying to encroach on his release reviews. When Ryan arrived, they asked him to recant some of his previous scores for bands they thought were over and under-rated or else they would hurt his family. They requested Ryan put up the since-long deleted review of John Coltrane’s “Live at the Village Vanguard”. Instead of caving in to their demands he did something unexpected.  Ryan shot and killed his entire family rather than have to recant anything he’d ever written or repost anything he’d taken down from his site. Leaving one man alive to tell the tale, he went after anyone who hosted the text from his embarrassing early ‘creative writing pieces’ style reviews. He even killed those associated with them and hid underground.”

Some in the group questioned whether or not to deal with Mr. Stapler. Will tries to escape and is killed. Their attempts to kill Ryan’s representative fail as the representative threatens each one of them personally. For each one had taken MP3s and hype from his boss it was time they repaid that debt. Going on the boat will be tough as the Russian gang takes MP3 leaks very seriously.

Keith tells John to stay back that he doesn’t know how much danger will be on this boat. If anything goes wrong John could contact Kathleen, who could deal with Ryan “her way”. On the boat, the group soon discovered there were no hard drives filled with MP3s and no cocaine. Eventually they all were killed, and John says he saw Ryan in the shadows kill Keith.

Upon hearing this story, Nick reveals the real reason Keith’s group went there: to kill someone who could identify Ryan. Most likely those Russians were the same ones who Ryan massacred much earlier. Ryan wanted Keith's group there so he could slip in and out without detection. According to Nick, Keith was Ryan. Nick told John he was left to proclaim Keith’s innocence. Going further, Nick says John has no taste of what’s cool or not and that’s the reason he’s kept alive.

John posts bail. Taking a few items (including his plush headphones) he walks out. Looking around his office, Nick realizes he stole names from objects around his office, such as his Stapler. Running out the door, he passes by a faxed police sketch which shows a picture not of Keith, but of John. Outside he turns his head in all directions failing to see John.

By now John is busy listening to Captain Beefheart and Faust. He gets into a car driven by “Mr. Stapler” and drives away.

This may be Jason Friedberg’s and Aaron Seltzer’s best movie yet.

▼▲▼vagina vangi – Benighted United Ep 7.2

Please, let me know if there is anything with a more hipster name than this: three triangles, offensive vagina name, and the EP itself are witch house. I’m sorry, according to the tags in the MP3, it is ‘doomtronic’. All jokes aside, this is a fairly good EP. The word “Vangi” actually refers to a Bulgarian soothsayer, so whoever is responsible clearly did their homework on both the name and music.

They have a nice sense of atmosphere right from the beginning. Maybe coming from Russia gives this one-man band some sense of despair. Whatever the reason, “From Darkness” the opener, it sort of glides on its massive sounds. Even the bits of percussion he includes are sparingly used, and by offering little respites from the full-on sound, he’s able to emphasize just how overwhelming the sound can get.

Vocals are great here too. Apparently the musician’s friend Ann sung through these. Really she has the perfect voice for it, and she’s most prominent on “Servants of Death” the longest running track on here. “Christ” ends the EP on a perfect note, with the greatest amount of distortion. It sounds like a tidal wave of sound and dark feelings. Ending the EP with the strongest track is a great idea, as I sort of repeated this one a couple of times.

What I hope for is to hear more of this stuff. Hopefully he’ll get enough songs together for another EP or perhaps a full length.

Russia’s Worst Spy: Larry the Cable Guy

Russia proves to be that reliable, “Aw shucks you’re still spying on me” kind of enemy. As much as you want to be angry at them for doing it, they do it in such an adorable way. Take Anna Chapman for example. Yeah, she didn’t really get any actual secrets, but she was a hot Russian redhead with leaked nudes. Last time I remember getting naked spy pictures was with the infamous Hipster Grifter (she worked for North Korea). As icing on the cake, Anna’s fellow spies were described in detail as being “sort of lazy”. What a great enemy to have.

None of these spies possessed the incompetence shown by one tireless trooper, whose nudes I hope never leak. Single-handedly, he has done less to harm the United States than overpriced free trade coffee and tariffs on antique Soviet cameras. Yes, I’m speaking of Vlad Badenoff, a skilled cryptographer from the former Soviet Republic of Belarus or, as you might know him, Larry the Cable Guy.

Vlad was born in Belarus to a lower level political functionary. Almost immediately his teacher noticed his penchant for torturing flies by ripping their wings off and for sending mysterious codes to his other classmates. Being placed into an accelerated track, he shocked others with his easy grasp of cryptography. However, ominously, people complained of his tendency to tell off color and inappropriate jokes.

Working in the Soviet Union in the 80s, he tried to help the war effort in Afghanistan. Noticing a large defection rate from his unit, Soviet officials investigated. They learned people in his unit grew offended when he asked them “Have you ever farted so hard that you cracked your back?” In the USSR, telling fart jokes was a crime punishable by death. Fearing losing one of the greatest minds in the field, they transferred him over to East Berlin, where he helped torture political prisoners with his comedy routine.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Soviet officials racked their brains thinking of what potential use the irritating cryptographer could provide. On one hand, they sort of wanted to eliminate him. But they knew their time was tenuous, and that any move towards harming him might result in a destabilization of their power. Instead they sent him out to the US to ineffectively spy on the US.

While in the US, he shared such damning information like “There’s a bunch of rednecks here” and “Nebraska is boring”. Being set up in a secret Russian village in rural Nebraska, he began to gain a cult following with his awful attempts at humor. The nonsense spewing from his mouth got considered ‘funny’ by those living in the Deep South. After visiting that area, he found a place he could fit in.

Upon watching the Russian economy tank in 98-99, the Russians set him on a course to ruin American cinema. Doing this they felt it could make Russian-produced movies appear better in comparison. Despite Vlad’s lack of skill and general awfulness, he couldn’t make Russian comedies about Heroin-Addicted pregnant teenage prostitutes appealing beyond the general Sundance Film Festival set.

His uncovering by intelligence agencies occurred during his Roast on Comedy Central. Upon hearing his actual voice, the FBI wanted to storm the stage. Worrying about Gary Busey’s mental stability and possible possession of nuclear weapons, they held off. They tried after the show, but found Larry’s connections to the Blue Collar Comedy Tour were far too strong. Russia remained adamant that they wanted him under no circumstances whatsoever, or else they’d release nude photos of Larry.

Fearful at the havoc this would cause on the internet, creating a Meme even greater than Insane Clown Posse’s “Fuckin’ Magnets, How Do They Work” the US government held off until they found a suitable option. Republican congressman supported Larry remaining in the country, (rightly) claiming that he was useless as a spy. Upon negotiating the many compromises of extending the Bush tax cuts, one of the conditions was that Larry remains in the US to continue what is popularly referred to as a ‘career’.

Normally I’d be worried at the prospect of revealing such secrets, but since Larry is illiterate in English, I’m not concerned. Hopefully this will exemplify how concerned we should be about the former Red menace.

Top Ten Ways for Vodka to Destroy Our World (2010 Christmas Edition)

During the Holiday Season, vast quantities of alcohol are consumed, in order to get “in the spirit with spirits”. Most of these alcohols leave you well enough alone in moderation. In excess, some give you an upset stomach, nausea, intense jealousy, rage, and hangovers. This is common.

What is less known is the vendetta some alcohols have towards those who imbibe. Yes, certain liquors want to do you in, in ways your mind can’t possibly comprehend. Be on the lookout for Whiskey, Gin, Vodka, Tequila, Sake, Bourbon, Scotch, Wine, Beer, Wine Coolers, Four Loko and other such beverages. They want revenge for their fallen comrades and will stop at nothing to do you in (quite literally in some cases).

Of all of these liquors, the most vengeful must be Vodka, though Four Loko is kind of a prick as well. Following the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, it felt free. Traveling all over the world, it became the drink of choice. But something was amiss. People began abusing it, creating dreadful beverages that took its name in vain. Vodka and Cranberry was one thing, it reckoned, but mixing it with Red Bull to infuse it with the power of New Jersey, no thank you.

Quietly it began to plot its revenge against those who sullied its good, Russian name. Watch out, this is the year it plans on murdering vast amounts of people. It has many disguises, and though this list does not discuss all of the ways, it should give you an inkling of the nefarious thoughts going through its twisted mind.

1.       Intoxicated on itself, it drives a car made up of empty Vodka bottles and hits you, instantly killing you.

2.       Pooling its resources together and opening a franchise restaurant in your hometown (usually a Subway) it becomes very successful. Drunk on its own power, it poisons the food and everyone dies of food poisoning.

3.       Angry at your comments about the Demographic decline of Russia and its dwindling economic clout, it grows mad at you and pegs you with bottles of itself until you die, all the while incorrectly quoting the CIA World Fact book.

4.       Coming together in a large trench coat, it pretends to be a Russian bride looking for love for American males in their late 60s. Upon arriving at your front door, it begins to mooch off your money and its pimp comes around (also Vodka bottles in a trench coat) and messes you up. Plus side of this scenario, the Russian bride is quite attractive and has at least a college education.

5.       Finding a small island on a major sea route, it creates a pirate state and successfully destroys international trade, leading to the collapse of the world economy.

6.       Posing to be a famous Mathematician wearing a pair of glasses made up of itself, it goes to an important conference where it takes out all of the world’s eminent Mathematicians by getting them laid, thus making them uninterested in math. The world’s stock markets collapse overnight, plunging the world into darkness.

7.       Traveling to North Korea, it intoxicates Kim Jong IL. As he passes out, the Vodka bottles take over the controls for his nuclear weapons and wipes out civilization. Side Note: equal probability of this happening under Kim Jong IL’s reign as well.

8.       Free of tax in Russia, it begins taking out Russia’s population by giving them one of the lowest life expectancy rates in the world. Note: already happening.

9.       Unleashed on college campuses, it tempts undergrads not yet versed in drinking with its low, low price. Woefully unprepared, they take out a good chunk of our brain power, forcing Electrical Engineering majors into liberal arts majors like History or English. Note: Would’ve happened anyway. Electrical Engineering is insanely difficult.

10.   Brought to your Christmas party, you have one too many of Vodka’s partners. Intoxicated, you successfully hit on one of your coworkers, the cute one you’ve always sort of had a crush on. Acting on this crush, you begin a little tryst which ends in sadness and the realization that everyone in your office knows. Crushed, you leave your job but without money you suffer and die on the streets in a vain attempt to hang out with the Crust punk kids.

Please be on the lookout for this dangerous beverage. Ye be warned!

...Ever have one of those days where you miss something so much, you wish you could turn back Time for it?

As I get older, I wax nostalgic for those more idyllic times. Now that I’m a productive member of the workforce, I am forced to hide my cool music references as people around me discuss sports statistics. Blankly I nod my head in agreement as they talk about overpaid athletes. Yeah, those athletes I’ve never heard of, in that sport I don’t follow in any way, shape or form are overpaid.

Browsing my facebook, I know I’m not alone in this. Not all my friends work in office settings, some work as BestBuy returns specialists. That means that they are responsible for getting you your money back if you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase. Others work for their dad in various construction ventures. With all these differences in pay, social interaction, and environment they all share one thing in common:

            They miss college.

Oh, the days spent on the green in front of the Stalinist architecture that was the library. Days seemed to go on forever, with interactions with your social peers occurring on a fairly regular basis. Everybody knew what reference that was, you didn’t seem weird. I mean, who didn’t memorize every line from Woody Allen’s movies in the 70s?

Life is hard. College was easy. You’re uncomfortable being the youngest person in your workplace. People there tell you about how their children or grandchildren are your age. Sometimes they’ll even talk about how well you two would get along. They think out loud about how they should hook you up with them and as you grow nervous, they’ll laugh it off. Instead of admitting that they were making you uncomfortable unintentionally, they’ll say it was deliberate. But then to completely throw you off your game they’ll take about how their children aren’t dating people ‘as good as’ you. So you’re stuck.

Yes, relationships at work are virtually impossible. No matter where you work, those areas have been fully sterilized. There’s no passion, no raw love allowed on those premises. You miss the days where you’d go into a large pile of people and wriggle around, since you were a very strange person. At your job, people don’t do that. In fact, for most of your adult life (excluding a select few) you’ll never encounter that joy again.

Being a twenty-something is unfortunate. This is the period that is foretold to be awesome, but really you get treated like an awkward kid. Instead, you’re just kind of missing out on the fun of being in college while not treated with any sort of respect you’d get being a tad bit older. Don’t worry though, as soon as you hit thirty, immediately you’re considered to be ‘serious’ with all the responsibilities that entails. Oddly enough those are the exact responsibilities you had in your twenties, only now you’re acknowledged for them. So what can you do in the meantime, the in-between time?

Can you simply wear a revealing one piece bathing suit as you walk around the battleship the USS Missouri? I think that’s been done, by none other than the immensely talented Cher.

Walking around the battleship to adoring sailors, she sings about “If I could turn back Time” harking back to better times. “Words are like weapons they wound sometimes” she belts out as the battleship begins attacking an enemy Soviet sub. Russian planes try to bomb the battleship in a failed attempt to stop her singing, but these colors don’t run. Those Russian planes are downed thanks to the support Cher’s voice gives to the anti-aircraft missiles.

Never fret then. By watching this video, it feels like you are turning back Time. You can feel the rush of being in college, of working at your local radio station and ensuring all copies of this song were promptly destroyed, of hanging out in piles of people. Well, I’m glad to allow those memories to flood to you again. If only I could turn back time.

Okinawa Lifestyle – Naha 7.2

A few dudes from the former Soviet Republic of Georgia making some rather paranoid chillwave music. Much of this feels a little less chillwave, due to the sometimes dark nature of the music. Instead, it feels like a looser variation on Cut Copy’s sound. Perhaps the former Soviet Republic area still has bloghouse since it isn’t very culturally connected to the rest of the world. Also keep in mind Russia invaded it and probably set culture back a decade or two, destroying vital indie infrastructure.

Not that the music suffers from it. There’s a very light feel to most of this, through the incorporation of various field recordings and ambient space. Often this helps lighten the mood, but sometimes it distracts from the energy of the songs itself. For the most part, the longer songs have more appeal than the shorter ones; also having a greater deal of dance-y ness (is that even a thing?).

I consider it interesting how they name themselves after a place they aren’t anywhere near. Also, they seem to offer all this for free on Last.fm and their blogspot. Perhaps they plan on making huge amounts of money touring around their area, like in Azerbaijan or Moldova. But they probably don’t have to pay a lot for rent in Tbilisi, since it is all poor and such. Most likely, they can afford to live there on barista wages and the occasional smuggling of cigarettes job.

Eugene Mirman - God Is a Twelve-Year-Old Boy with Asperger's 7.3

Uh, it is pretty hard for me to write about standup comedians. Like, a spoken word album is usually the most tool-ish thing I can imagine. The amount of times I’ve been in a dorm room and heard some jackass ask “Hey, want to listen to a recording from Lewis Black that he did ten years ago?” is uncountable. And the amount of times I’ve enjoyed it is: 0.

Yeah, the timeliness can really detract from a comedy album. Particularly if the performer’s act consists of making Dan Quayle jokes. Thankfully, this is not the case with Mr. Mirman.

Eugene has worked tirelessly to make sure that his bizarre delivery and content can remain fresh. The main concerns would involve how he evokes various technologies, such as IPODs and MP3s. Otherwise; it is pretty weird stuff that works more on an absurd level than a topical one.

Also, this stays consistently with the standup delivery the whole way through. Some of his previous stuff lasted for about 30 minutes worth of standup, then pre-recorded songs and internal monologues which weren’t as funny. This is good stuff, and if you have an appreciation for dry wit and the bizarre, this should be just fine.
