Dadaists were deeply into the weird back in the day. Kurt Schwitters created this bizarre art world for himself, possibly as a way of dealing with the increasing awful conditions he had to do with as Germany fell into the incredibly destructive World War II. Making a “cathedral of erotic misery” called the Merzbau seemed a much better place than “actual real-life misery”.
Unfortunately, it is very hard to find a lot of Dadaist recordings. But UbuWeb.com sound does have this free for download on their site, so that’s reassuring. Plus, it is actually a very interesting recording, just not one you might groove to every day.
Essentially, you’re listening to a tone poem by Kurt. It gets very hard to describe someone making noises with their voice and throat. For a comparison, Jaap Blonk has performed this piece as well, in case that means anything to you.
In case it doesn’t, you’re in for some really weird stuff. Kurt proves that Germans indeed do have a sense of humor, just a terribly bizarre one that makes hardly any sense at all.
