The Budos Band – The Budos Band III 6.9

The Budos Band is a strange beast indeed. Unlike most bands, they have no problem churning out what is essentially the same sound album after album. Obviously this would be an issue if they were doing something that everyone was already doing. But I feel that Afro-Funk revivalism hasn’t really reached a fever pitch yet, so they’re pretty safe.

Besides, even if that became a thing, these guys most likely would prepare to do what they’ve done for every album: have fun. Each song is fun, complete with horns, bass, and a gnarly warm sound. What they do is take part the past and bring it back, completely unchanged. Their jokes within the song titles are pretty good too, titles like “Black Venom” and the sparse “Golden Dunes” are things most bands wouldn’t consider twice.

A lack of originality could be thrown at these guys, that they are unabashed recyclers. Bands usually try to create their own identity; these guys don’t really do that. That would be the biggest beef most people would have with this. And though this isn’t exactly the most strikingly original stuff, it is well-executed with a good sense of humor. So I can’t exactly fault them.
